Phoenix Digs Deep
NASA released this image from the Phoenix Lander on September 1. It shows the deepest trenches Phoenix has dug into the Martian surface so far. The deepest, which is about 7 inches, exposed more of the frozen subsurface so Phoenix could collect sample shavings of ice.
By analyzing the soil material and ice, scientists are searching for evidence that Mars could have supported life at some point in its history.
